Running for Huddy
Running a marathon is no small feat it takes time, training, and mental strength. But for Sophie a young medical student from Cairns, the reason behind the run makes every step worth it. This year, she’s taking on 7Cairns marathon festival in honour of her close friend Hudson, who passed away from rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, in 2020.
Last year, she ran her first half marathon as a personal challenge. This year, she’s turning that challenge into something more meaningful.
“I thought it would be an awesome opportunity to fundraise for Huddy, and for other people impacted by sarcomas. I’m fortunate enough to be a medical student, so I understand from another point of view the impact that sarcoma can have on everyone involved. This is my way of contributing to the sarcoma community and doing my part to help as many people as I can and it’s something I wish to continue for the rest of my life.”
The two met in 2016, when she started at a new school. “He was one of the first people I met. He made me feel so welcomed and loved,” she recalls. “We just clicked, and he became like a brother to me.”
“At school, you would barely see us apart. He always had my back and would stand up for me no matter what. He had an energy that lit up any room he walked into. Everyone loved him. He was funny, kind, and an incredible soccer and basketball player. He just made me want to be a better person. He taught me to treat everyone with kindness, regardless of how they treat you.”
Through her marathon and fundraising, she hopes to shine a light on sarcomas as they still go largely unspoken.
“I hope my fundraising efforts raise awareness for a rare and aggressive disease. Everyone’s heard about breast, bowel, and lung cancer, but not as many people know about sarcoma. I want the people facing sarcomas to know there are people that are backing them and supporting them.”
Huddy’s kindness, strength, and character left a lasting impact on Sophie. He shaped the person she is today and now; she’s giving back in his honour.
Determined to continue his legacy of helping others, Sophie hopes her efforts will raise awareness and offer support to those facing sarcoma.
“I hope my fundraising helps shine a light on this rare and aggressive disease. Not many people know about sarcoma. I want those going through it to know they’re not alone and that people are backing them.”
“This half marathon is my way of living for both Huddy and me. I’ll keep fighting and advocating for sarcoma, for as long as I can.”
