Message from the Chair of ANZSA - December 2025

As we draw to the close of 2025, it has been inspiring to witness the continued commitment, collaboration, and progress demonstrated by ANZSA professionals, members, and patients across Australia and New Zealand. Together, we remain focused on improving outcomes for everyone affected by sarcoma.

2025 has been another productive year for the sarcoma community, marked by meaningful developments in clinical care, research, education, and advocacy. These achievements reflect the dedication of our ANZSA members working closely with patients, families, and the broader community.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to each and every director current and past who have provided service tirelessly and selflessly in the pursuit of sarcoma patient care. On behalf of the Board I once again warmly welcome two new directors Richard Boyle and Andrew Johnson. I express sincere appreciation to retiring director Richard Carey Smith for his valuable and passionate contribution during his time on the Board.  

The Board continues to regularly review its composition and effectiveness to ensure strong governance and representation. We are grateful for the expertise and commitment of all Directors, whose contributions underpin the progress of the organisation. 

Your Board has remained actively engaged throughout the year, guiding ANZSA’s work across all strategic priorities. A key milestone was the development of ANZSA’s 2025–2027 Strategic Plan, shaped through our strategic planning workshop in February and informed by valuable member and community input. This plan sets clear priorities and provides a strong foundation for ANZSA’s work in the years ahead.

Our committees continue to play a vital role in advancing ANZSA’s mission. The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) remains a strong collaborative forum for sarcoma professionals across Australia and New Zealand, fostering research partnerships and innovation. The Consumer Advisory Panel (CAP) continues to provide an essential patient and consumer voice, ensuring lived experience informs our work.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of those involved in delivering ANZSA’s meetings and events throughout the year, which continue to provide valuable opportunities for learning, collaboration, and connection within the sarcoma community.

Finally, I extend my sincere thanks to ANZSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Denise Caruso, and the ANZSA staff for their professionalism, dedication, and tireless advocacy on behalf of members and patients.
